YEARS 3 & 4
Mrs Lucas’ class
Our class has 29 children from year three and four and our teacher is
Mrs Lucas, except Wednesday morning when Mrs George teaches us science
when we enjoy learning about friction.
Every morning we have Mrs Shelton helping us.
At the moment we are learning about the continents and some of the
countries in them. To open our learning we took part in a “European day”
in the school field. We spent the day in the field putting up tents and
then finding out information about European countries. (There is a
display of photos on the stairs near our classroom.) We played
different games such as boules and croquet. We also tried food from
Spain, France, Germany and Italy. We liked the Spanish sausage best! It
was great fun.
On Thursday morning we are learning to play the xylophone with Mrs
Mitchell; we have brand new instruments to play. Later on in the term we
will be learning about the Romans and in December will be visiting
Verulamium in St. Albans and taking part in a Roman market session,
exploring the types of food and items ancient Romans would have used.

High Frequency Words to Read and Spell
Here are a list of the most frequently used words in the English
language; it will really help you child if you could help them read
these; for the younger children they will start looking and reading the
first 100 - two on one day and then those two again with another two new
ones. This will help the children to build up a knowledge of reading and
spelling these important words. There are words in the lists which
cannot be sounded out or broken up, so the children could be asked to
think of ways to help them remember the pattern of the spelling etc.

Xylophone Concert
On Thursday 15th July year three and four played and sang four songs to
the whole school. This was the finale of the Wider Opportunities Program
organised by Aylesbury Music Centre to encourage children to try a wider
variety of musical instruments. The children sang and played their
favourite numbers from the year, including a version of Frere Jacque
with words linked to Harry Potter and “We can play the xylophone” sang
and played to the tune of “What shall we do with the drunken sailor?”
Mrs Helen Mitchell from Aylesbury Music Centre has taught the children
all year and the difference to their musicality has been incredible. The
other experience on offer was the visit to the Civic Centre to play and
try out a huge variety of instruments. Many of the children in this
class play other instruments and several more have asked to play
instruments next year.
The audience of children and teachers were very appreciative and
although the musicians were nervous, they played with gusto and
enjoyment.
